How Can Ordinary People Make an Impact on Mental illness in their Community
Vince Beyer is a mechanical design drafter by trade. But his passion is mental health. After surviving multiple suicide attempts in 2001, he has been steadily working toward his own recovery and building a team of like-minded individuals whose goal is to bring mental health recovery to those struggling with anxiety, depression and addiction. He discovered that faith is the antidote to fear, which is often the root cause of mental illness. Since the Bible says that “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.”, he is a big proponent of helping people develop a love for God’s Word.
Along the way, his recovery has inspired him to write 3 books, one being The Victory Tips Program, a peer-to-peer teaching tool. Written in easy to understand language, even a 6th grader can read it and benefit from it. The Happiness Basics book is part of The Victory Tips Program and serves has an ideal guide for small groups at the church. Finally, the book Victory! Is a guide for people who want to learn how to be an effective peer-support worker to those who are climbing out of a mental health challenge.
The end goal is to raise up an army of trained peer-support workers who can be “first-responders” to those who need help mentally. Once established, no one will need to struggle through their recovery alone. There will always be a peer-support worker who can take a call or go for coffee with someone who needs company until their next counseling appointment. With God’s help, this will come to pass!
